Commentary on Jude pt. 3

6 And those messengers that did not keep their first place, but having deserted their dwelling
place, He has kept in everlasting chains under darkness for judgment of the great day;

Messengers who betray God are damned. This passage not only refers to heavenly messengers but also
to earthly ones. The destruction of the temple was still in the future at the time this letter was written.
This was the great and notable Day of the Master. 2Peter 2.4-6 gives examples of God’s justice where
He punishes the evil and saves the just from destruction. For if God did not spare failed messengers,
but delivered them to chains of darkness, thrust down into Tartarus, having been kept to
judgment; and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, the eighth, a herald of
justice, bringing a flood on a world of ungodly ones. And covering the cities of Sodom and
Gomorrah with ashes, He condemned them by catastrophe, setting an example to men intending
to be ungodly.

7 and even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them, in the same manner as they did
give themselves over to whoredom in going after strange flesh, laid down an example, in that they
underwent the vengeance of everlasting fire.
Sodom and Gomorrah and their sister cities were guilty
of many abominations. Their sins are called out in several places throughout Scripture besides the story
of their destruction. This story is an example for us of God’s justice. Jude calls attention to the fact that
they were mongrelizers and this was abhorrent before the Master. The words strange flesh here are
translated for strange (heteros) meaning another; other; one or the other. (adj fem gen sg form) God
typically uses the feminine form of words when calling people whores and race mixers in Scripture.
Flesh is (sarx) (noun fem gen sg form) flesh, of the human body, distinguished from the spirit or life
giving breath. Also it is well known that homosexuality was one of the greatest abominations of these
cities. This is included under the ‘’going after strange flesh’’. It is gender mongrelization. Do not forget
that bestiality is also included in this condemnation. God has declared these things abomination. And
you shall not sleep with a male as in a bed of a woman, for it is an abomination. And you shall not
give your bed to any quadruped for sowing to bring defilement on it, nor shall any woman stand
before any quadruped so as to be mounted, for it is loathsome. (Leviticus 18.22,23)

8 Likewise also, these of perverted imagination mongrelize the flesh, hate mastership, and
blaspheme the reputation.
People who mongrelize have a perverted imagination and they hate the
discipline of Christ and blaspheme His racial justice. These people are spiritually corrupt. The word
mongrelize here is μιαίνουσι a form of miainó μιαίνω. It means to taint, to defile, to pollute of sacred
things; to declare defiled, unclean. To be defiled; to be unclean. Spiritual mongrelization leads to
physical mongrelization. These people sense purity on some level and this is why they blaspheme the
Everliving God.
